Welcome to my new blog space, Midnight Oil! If you are interested in following along on my first fixer-upper journey, and all the highs and lows that are sure to come along with the closing package, then keep on scrolling!

In July of 2020, during COVID-19 uncertainty and a tough job market, I decided to take a new job in Maryland which had some exciting opportunities I wanted to join. Given the timing of the new job start date, I had to find housing and move my life to Maryland in about three weeks (and during a hurricane) - easily one of the most spontaneous things I have done! It turns out that the rental market in Silver Spring is pretty hot, so I was only able to find a one-year lease, which led me to keeping my eye on the market for a steal shortly after unpacking my boxes. Along with 2021 came that opportunity! I was able to snag an estate sale for a great price, and the opportunity to change every surface, both hidden and visible, inside and outside the house. However, I have to say that it has amazing bones, so I am really lucky to have gotten in here. I would like to formally give a shout-out to my realtor who made this happen in under four weeks, which isn't surprising considering he is a Penn State grad (We Are!).
I am under a bit of a time crunch to get the house livable as soon as possible, so that I can move over my furniture and belongings from the rental. Therefore, I likely will not have time to produce the "vlogging" I had previously imagined before getting a fixer-upper. However, I will try to post occasional updates on the progress as I go, and I will eventually compile some recaps of the video I have grabbed during the renovation efforts.
And don't worry, that avocado kitchen and two-part floral wallpaper isn't going anywhere anytime soon! First up: carpet removal, wallpaper removal from the bedrooms, and wall priming.

I admire you niece…..Barb and I spent most of the weekend replacing an LED light strip under our kitchen island. I thought it would be easy, but didn’t count on the fact that the LED strip we replaced was wired completely differently than the new one. This required taking a switch apart, then a cabinet and finally, an outlet. And that was before we even strung the lights. All of this, of course, was done on hands and knees! So now we are tired and beat up, and you can’t even tell we did anything. Sigh!
