Extreme Urbanism IV: Affordable Housing in Dongri, Mumbai
Dongri, Mumbai is not only a hyper-dense community within the heart of Mumbai, but it also has rich Ismaili heritage as it is home to the historic Jamatkhana. The housing is starting to deteriorate, and as new towers (market-rate and otherwise) seem to be the only solution provided, I proposed a new vision for meeting the density requirements while making surrounding context a constant guide for the design. By reorganizing the open space that is currently between building footprints in intricate and inflexible patterns, I proposed a block renovation that creates a large inner court for the residents as well as a public courtyard engaging with the community at the end of the block. The design provides more units than its existing condition, so residents from other blocks could then move to open units on this one while the same strategy became implemented across the site, thus reducing the need for disruptive "temporary" housing.
