Domesticity and Urban Life: Artists' Community

As an immersion into the Urban Design program at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, we took on a large-scale urban vision for New York City's lower East Side.  Residing between two public housing projects, we aimed to create an affordable living community that relied on non-traditional funding methods that would help relive pressure from the state without fully relying on developers.  Our artist community includes market rate housing as a traditional funding strategy, as well as large-scale art storage spaces for institutions to rent.  The funds procured through the storage options, as well as the rentable institutional spaces, will help fund the affordable housing on a long-term basis without involving additional tax breaks or developer incentives.  The community is arranged on two major axes that connect the surrounding neighborhoods, filled with amenities that both the residents and visiting patrons can enjoy.
